Maths

Mathematics introduces children to concepts, skills and thinking strategies that are essential in everyday life and support learning across the curriculum. It helps children make sense of the numbers, patterns and shapes they see in the world around them, offers ways of handling data in an increasingly digital world and makes a crucial contribution to their development as successful learners.

Intent

At Copper Valley Infant and Nursery Academy we believe mathematics equips pupils with a powerful set of tools to understand the world including logical reasoning and problem solving skills. Mathematics is important in everyday life and we endeavour to ensure that children develop an enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them for life.

Our aim is that every child leaves Copper Valley Infant and Nursery  with a secure understanding of maths. We are currently embedding a ‘Mastery Maths’ approach where pupils work on fluency in maths alongside reasoning and problem solving skills.

We intend on delivering a curriculum which:

Allows children to be a part of creative and engaging lessons, giving children a range of opportunities to explore mathematics.

Gives each child a chance to think of themselves as mathematicians and build resilience and perseverance when faced with mathematical challenges.

Engages all children and entitles them to same quality of teaching and learning.

Make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency and reasoning- particularly when solving problems.

Is in line with the expectations in the National Curriculum 2014

Implementation

Our mastery approach to the curriculum is designed to develop children's knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts.

Teaching and Learning , Content and Sequence

We use high-quality, carefully chosen resources to support the teaching and learning of mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

We follow the National Curriculum and use carefully sequenced learning objectives form White Rose schemes of work as a guide to support teaching and learning.(In Y1 and Y2)

We promote the use of concrete manipulatives, pectoral representations and abstract thinking to help children to visual and understand mathematical concepts.

Our daily maths lessons are supplemented through the NCETM 'Mastering Number' sessions .

We make use of technology, where appropriate , to enhance learning experiences.

We recognise that every child is unique and has different starting points. We provide appropriate support and challenges to ensure that the needs of all children are met.

For children working outside the year group, individual learning activities are provided to secure their progress.

Impact

Our maths provision helps pupils to develop confidence and resilience in problem solving, reasoning and mathematical communication.

Our children are enthusiastic learners who actively participate in their maths learning.

Our pupils leave KS1 well prepared for the next stage in their learning.

As a school, we look to keep up-to-date with the latest research and pedagogy in the teaching of maths and are part of a ‘Sustaining Mastery’ workgroup linked to the Cornwall Maths Hub.

Take a look at the ‘Mathematics in Bridge Schools’ document below for more information on our approach to the teaching and learning of maths.

Maths in the EYFS and Parental Engagement

Mathematics is used extensively in everyday life from telling the time, paying for the shopping, weighing ingredients when cooking, playing with toys, arranging objects, looking at the shapes of roads signs- the list goes on.
Using mathematical language as early as possible in the EYFS is essential to lay the foundations for understanding of what that language means and to build familiarity of its use. Mathematical language can be tricky for children, for example what is 'take away'? Something to do with subtraction or a meal you order when you don't feel like cooking! Parents can look at the fantastic "Maths family postcards' which  give excellent examples of everyday activities they can do with their child and the suggested prompts to use which will develop familiarity  and greater understanding of maths language and concepts. These 'postcards' can be found in the documents section below.

Parents

Parents are a valuable resource when supporting pupils with their understanding of mathematics. They can support pupils at home with resources matched to the learning from Whitehorse each term.  Please see below to access these materials for Year 1 and Year 2. These booklets can be printed at home if you wish or used as a basis to practise current learning. They are obviously designed to be used in numerical order.
